what do you do on a snow day?

the snow has arrived!
it started yesterday afternoon and continued on and off through the night.
for the second time in two months, we're snowed in- and it's a delightful winter wonderland.
we started the morning with coffee and pancakes, and then ...
we cleaned out and re-organized our fridge ...
and our freezer!
we are very extremely proud of our work.
these tools came in handy:
the label maker is my roommate's, but i've already decided that i definitely need one of my own.
and did you notice our ghetto shelf in the fridge? we had an "incident"-
the glass inside the frame shattered unexpectedly.  seriously.
we've jury rigged this one, and we're crossing our fingers that the others hold!
really, has anyone ever heard of this happening??

talk of the town

everybody's asking: is it really going to SNOW?
sure, the day's clear, sunny skies and almost warm weather seemed to herald spring, not the wintry mixes supposedly right around the corner.  but temperatures are dropping.
plus, usually i'd say that here in nc, opinions regarding snow tend toward skepticism, but about a month ago they predicted snow, and this happened:

it was a veritable winter wonderland.
schools got out early and the whole town shut down for a day or so.
i, unfortunately, ran out of milk on a street that was not high-priority for snow plows.
this time around, i made a quick trip to the grocery for essentials:

distractions

i find it all too easy to forget about haiti in the midst of my unaffected, day-to-day life.  thankfully, there are reminders all around me: at the grocery store, on tv, on signs around town.
i am reminded to give, to grieve, to pray.

we read this passage in church on sunday, and i've been turning to it throughout the week:
all things quake with fear at your presence; they tremble because of your power
but your merciful promise is beyond all measure; it surpasses all that our minds can fathom

in other news, our landlord has "fixed" our cracked/broken windows by covering them with cardboard, and we discovered a minor gas leak in our fireplace.

"martha lookin king"*

today was a great day: no school + sunshine and 60-degree weather is perfect for sleeping in, dressing up, having a dance party, and playing in the park.
it makes me ready for spring/summer.  i could get used to this.

life lessons: always peel the orange

yesterday afternoon, as my charge and i were enjoying our snacks, she became very interested in my orange, which i was happy to share.  rather than peel the orange, i'd begun to slice it in thin semi-circles.  i showed her how to eat it by biting into the fruit and pulling it away from the rind.
unfortunately, she didn't understand.  instead, she put the whole slice, rind and all, into her mouth and started chewing.  i didn't know what to do.  i figured that she'd spit it out, especially since she tends to be picky about what she eats, and rind isn't exactly edible.  i tried to explain; i tried to get her to spit it out.  i kept hoping; she kept chewing.  then, she swallowed.  she'd eaten the rind.
she reached over for more.
i peeled the rest of that orange.

welcome to the future

I just figured out I could blog from my PHONE.
I know, I know, I've been living in the 19th century.
And, let's face it, I kinda like it there.
But the recent cold spell makes me exceedingly grateful for central heating.
